I recently read an article about a parent who was fined $10 for not sending their child to school with a balanced meal....The Canadian Government's Early Learning & Child Care takes this very seriously...as they should...but, to hand out a $10 fine? Sometimes this is what it takes to get parents' attention.
With all respect to "the system", I can't ever remember packing a balanced meal for lunch. PB&J & a handful of chips was the norm. On a good day, I had an apple, banana, or orange. Either way, as I got older, I relied soley on the cafeteria for the balanced meal. Most students claim they don't care for the cafeteria. Ours, in La Feria was pretty good. So good, we would look for seconds...
Let's see what mom sent: 1) leftover roast beef & potatos 2) an orange 3) carrots 4) milk....
If mom would have added some wheat bread, for a "sandwich", she may have gotten out of the fine. Instead, the school gave the child some Ritz Crackers to complete the balance...and charged her $10..it only has to happen once....I'm sure it won't happen again... :)
I love football season!
Yes, I love the sport, but I also love the pagentry that comes with the sport, especially at the high school & college level. Fans are so passionate about the sport & seeing their kids on the field, on the sidelines & in the stands...from the players, trainers, band, cheer squad, dance team, flag corp, and the entire student body.
Say what you want about the sport, but it really brings a community and school together.
I ran across this video (now viral) of the Ohio University Marching 110. They covered "THE FOX". It was so neat to see the hard work of these students pay off in this performance. Being in the marching band is an art. When you take "art" and add more "art" to it, you get creativeness to another level.
I remember in high school (La Feria) my senior year, our band director allowed us to "cut loose" towards the end of the season. He had all the tuba players dress up in pink outfits. We each had our own tail. The horn part of the tuba was draped with a mask of the Pink Panther. Yup, I dressed up as the pink panther & performed the song. It was the coolest, most embarassing thing I had ever done in my life...but it was fun!
I'm anxious to see the high school bands across the 956 perform their Pigskin shows. It should be another exciting year. I've seen several practice sessions of a couple of schools (McA Memorial, Weslaco, La Feria) & looking forward to the rest....Let's see what ya' got!
Many South Texas peeps joined us for last year's 10 Man Jam. One of our performers was Dustin Lynch. He performed his song COWBOYS & ANGELS. See the video (provided by www.MadeFilms.net) of Dustin performing this huge RGV hit.
We've already had people asking if we will have another 10 Man Jam this year. The answer is YES, December 7th. The lineup announcement will be on the morning of November 1st. Tickets will go on sale that afternoon. Mark your calendars for another huge event!
Man, I can't wait!
Njoy the video...watch it all the way through & see the reaction Dustin gets as he nears the end of the song.
I recently has a chance to see & meet a new duo in the country music scene. They go by the name: AMERICAN YOUNG. They have a new song that I wanted you to listen to. Check out the video & let us know your thoughts... :)
Most of us enjoy what we do for a living. The pay is decent, the hours can be hectic at times, the benefits are so-so....but, is that all that will make us & keep us happy at work. I read an article, recently: http://falmouth.patch.com/groups/business-news/p/12-signs-you-are-working-in-a-toxic-office_06548ab4 about the 12 signs that your workplace may be toxic. You may want to look these over & see how the scale balances at your workplace.
1. Your boss is a recognized bully.
2. Co-workers frequently gang up on each other.
3. It's not unusual for co-workers or your boss to take credit for your work.
4. You're doing the work of three or four people without any recognition.
5. Colleagues are insubordinate.
6. False accusations are the norm.
7. The boss is ineffective or absentee.
8. Poor performers never seem to lose their jobs, while strong workers are fired.
9. Everyone operates under different rules.
10. There is a lack of formal training plans or programs.
11. People are promoted in random, seemingly illogical ways.
12. Supervisors don't communicate expectations well.
Thoughts? Does the shoe fit?...

I remember as a kid, football was the thing to do. I grew up playing in the school yard, at home, watching it on tv...and I remember the record breaking 99 yard touchdown run the Dallas Cowboys had against the Vikings, "the catch", and the miracle hail mary from Doug Flutie for Boston College vs Miami.
One of my fondest memories of the Dallas Cowboys was a pair of slippers that my mom gave me one Christmas day. They were fuzzy blue slippers with the head & helmet of a player on the toes. After I opened the gift & saw them, I instantly became overjoyed. My mom said, "mi hijo, do you like them?...I thought you would...mira, como Tony Dorsett..." I gave my mom a puzzle look & said "mom, Tony Dorsett isn't white, he's black!".....YIKES! Buzz kill....
As the new season starts, I want to wish the middle schoolers / junior high kids the best. Learn from the experience. Have fun with it - not everyone will be the next Troy Aikman. It takes years of hard work to develop your skills. Even as pros, the Cowboys, Texans, and other NFL players are still working on skills.
For high schoolers, rivalries will kick up, the competition is tougher & quicker. The Friday Night Lights can be alarming for some at first. Get settled in & take care of business.
For the fans, including parents, spectators, school body...enjoy the sport, remember good sportsmanship. You wouldn't want someone bad mouthing your teenager, so why should you bad mouth others. It's ok to boo the officials, but remember, they are reacting to something that has happened quick & must make a call, that much quicker. Being an official IS NOT EASY!
When I was in college, I took a coaching class, along with several football players, some of which went on to the pros. One day, we were given "an officials test." One that must be passed by NCAA officials in order to officiate a game. I went in, thinking - I know this sport, I shouldn't have any trouble with this test....After everything was turned in, not one person in that classroom passed. SHOCKER! Here you have collegiate players & they couldn't even pass the test.
We had about an hour to complete the test & decide on the different game situations. Real officials have a split second to decide a call...
So next time you "boo" an official, think twice. Could you pass the test?
Enjoy the season, I wish your team all the best, unless you play La Feria or Weslaco - lol...jj
You may have heard Patches, Karina & I talking about a dog that "just ended up in my backyard..." It was weird, I walked outside & poof, there she was. Since then (about 3 weeks now) I have been caring for this dog. She's pretty cool, although I'm sure a bit intimidated by the two bigger labs also in the yard.
It''s pretty cute to see her grab food in her mouth, then walk away, place the food down & begin chewing it...away from the bigger dogs.
What's even weirder!
Last week, I was washing the car in the front yard. I heard a small yelp. I couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from, but I assumed it was one of the neighbor's dogs, so I went on. Monday, we discovered a teeny-tiny puppy near our gate. It is less than two weeks old. Her eyes are still closed. We are currently formula bottle feeding her. We've named her POVA. It is short for Maria Sharapova, the tennis player...
Here is a picture of her. You can really tell she is teeny-tiny. Look what she's in... :)
If you had a chance to catch the latest season of NBC TV's, THE VOICE, you had a chance to see Danielle Bradberry. She is a young, talented person...and she's country! YES! Danielle was a part of TEAM BLAKE. She rocked the blind auditions & went on to win The Voice.
So now that she's won, now what? Check out the video of Danielle in the studio, letting you know what she's up to.
