For years, we've grown to know them as Scorpions...The UTB/TSC Scorpions - but now that they are two seperate entities, TSC will keep the Scorpion name, leaving UTB without a mascot...

Now, I don't have a "mascot naming doctorate degree," but I'm not sure that the list of names that "have been narrowed down to" are fitting...let's see - - the five finalists are:

1) the ocelot

2) the Vaquero

3) a bullshark

4) the jaguarundi

5) a parrot.....

I can understand the thinking behind the ocelot - but it doesn't stand out - it doesn't frighten me - if I was another college competing against the Ocelots, I wouldn't be concerned....the vaquero, eh, it has possibilities, just because of our heritage & tradition in South Texas...the bullshark,...ugh, I can see the proximity to SPI & the water, but if thats the case, how about "The Scallops" or "The Lobsters"...or "The Tarpons..." wait, we've already got tarpons...marlins?

The jaguarundi, eh....possible - but I don't see the connection...& finally, the parrot...seriously? Now, if we called it "El Cotorro", maybe - then we'd be just another part of the chalupa board....

Really, what are your thoughts - we can all make fun of the names, but UTB is asking for your help - go to the UTB Facebook fan page or on Twitter at @UTBrownsville using #UTBmascot hashtag.

Which of these will be the new UTB mascot? We'll find out, Friday - when the winner will be announced at the Student Union.
