I knew Toby Keith was talented, but wow. Check out this link to former NBA player Wayman Tisdale's site with Toby singing "Never Gonna Give Up" on Tisdales' 8th cd. This is really cool.

I've been doing the KTEX morning show now for several years, almost always since I got to KTEX in 1995. Wow, I love the music and the artists and the fans.

Working with JoJo in the mornings has brought us a nice following. People still ask us where the other one is when we are by ourselves. I always tell them.."No es mi dia..."

Got my PASSPORT ready. Wife and I headin' to Mexico to see the sea. We leave out Sunday and I can't wait to hear the surf and enjoy the mojitas.

062208
Wow the heat is unbelievable, but what an an absolutly beautiful day.. I just got back from Oak Hill Ranch and it always bothers me that I still haven't got any acreage to buy so that I can go there to enjoy some  time off. I vow to take care of that this year!

061708
What a lot of fun hanging out with lucky KTEX listeners who had qualified to win a an '08 Ford F150 truck from Boggus Ford in McAllen on Saturday. 87 qualifiers showed up with their families and friends and it was wonderful to meet so many great listeners and find out why they like to listen. Ktex has more plannedfor this year and next...can't wait to let you know as each of them come around!

061708
What a Father's Day. My two out-of-town kids called to wish me a great day, my daughter and her boyfriend bar b qued. And I got to enjoy lunch with my Father-In-Law and family. It was a great day!

061008
Had all the grandkids in over the weekend. It is so much easier being a grandfather than a father. My grandson gave me a picture of him in his baseball uniform...now I gotta get a frame and put it up here in the office.

060508
Summer is not here yet, but it already feels that way. I should have gotten the a/c checked back in the fall. My attic is to hot for the people to get up there and check the system now Things will be planned better next year.
Got out to see Ironman finally, you know the one with Robert Downey Jr. in it. I really like this guy as an actor. Still got to see Indiana Jones, and the new one You Don't Mess With The Zohan.

052608
Really thought about my dad alot on this Memorial Day. He was a former Navy guy who lost some buddies in WWII. He always had a beer in their honor on Memorial Day, even though he wasn't a big drinker.

051908
What a great time in Las Vegas. Got to eat at Emeril's for the 1st time. Great food and service. Then brunch the next day at Craftsteak next door to Emeril's(both in the Studiowalk inside the MGM Grand), then surprised with tix to the ACM Awards show. Country is the only music with the stars to put on such a great show. We are blessed to be around such great acts that are so much down to earth.

Had fun coaching some great valley folks against the Cowboys! We lost but everyone had fun! And we helped the Pharr Crimestoppers.

My 2nd granddaughter is now celebrating her 1st year on the planet!!! I'm a step-dad, so I never got to watch the formative years for my own kids. It amazes me everyday that just her smile can melt my heart. I hope I'm around long enough to see her grow into a wonderful person.

Tune in weekdays for some really stupid news...these are things JoJo and I will be reporting on that just make little to no sense. Like how much its gonna cost us to find out how much the government is gonna send us in the next couple of weeks

Don't forget to check out my pics of my vacations and getaways. I love to travel. I even have a new update of places we can all go. Feel free to include your places of interest and why other KTEX listeners should go to some of these places.

Still haven't cleaned out the garage....at least a 2 day affair. There is plenty to do on my list. But I will prevail. In a couple of months anyhow.

Talk to ya soon! You can e-mail me with any questions or comments patches@clearchannel.com  Make everyday as nice as you can. See you on the radio.

George Carlin died Sunday evening at 71. (no, I'm not there yet no matter what JoJo says). I have cassette tapes and albums of Carlin and I think I've seen at least 12 of his 14 HBO specials at least twice. I give him so much credit. He made you look at life thru different eyes. He shook you to your foundational belief core. He made you question things. As I've gotten older, Carlins' humor rubbed me the wrong way a lot of times, and still made me laugh out loud to the point I thought "I shouldn't be laughing at this". No subject was out of bounds. But he didn't attack without having a purpose behind it. Anything that makes you think is a good thing. We've lost a good thing. But he also had such an influence on many different comedians that someone should be able to carry at least his attitude forward to teach others as well.

062208
Looking forward to a few days off later this  month so I can take my wife on a well deserved vacation. I cannot wait for football season(well, it's so hot I'm dreaming of cooler weather) 'cause basketball and hockey are done and baseball isn't as captivating because there are so many games going on at the same time, and the real battles, as good as some individual games can be, are really in the last month of the season.
Is anyone excited about the presidential vote? And why? I am a firm believer that the most important vote is for Senators and Congressman(my belief is that they should only be allowed 2 terms anyway), because they are the lawmakers. They are mostly lawyers. They write evrything in LEGALESE. Which us common people cannot read without a dictionary and a used car salesman to help translate. And they are the ones that put so much extra stuff into every bill that comes up for a vote, that we don't know where they're selling our future to, much less to whom. But, WE NEED TO VOTE!!!
And get out the ones that are not working for us. And if things are still messed up, we need to get them all out. (alright, I'm done)

061708
Read a letter on the KTEX morning show from Friday June 13 edition of VMS "Letters To The Editor" section from a pilot in Harlingen who was bringing up the fact that he thinks overweight people are finally gonna have to pay more to fly because a heavier plane wastes fuel(and he was all for it...I think from his tone, he didn't like overweight people). I gave him the rasberry on the air because you ain't gonna save that much fuel in a large plane to justify increases passed along to us. It's about remaining profitable. The airlines are in the same boat as us. They should be demanding more fuel-efficient planes(but the engineers have to meet the bottom line of their companies, and until airlines demand fuel-efficiency, it won't happen. Because airplane builders would have to spend a lot of money to redesign their planes, and unless they can sell a bunch, it's cost prohibitive) and then we can all make it a greener world and keep traveling on them.(instead of walking to, let's say Dallas, and losing some weight along the way)

061008
Is there a product that can take that film off of headlights? They are too expensive to replace, but they don't shine that bright at night.

061008
My wife is out of town on business. And because of that, I am so messed up at home...you know the feeling, somethings not right, a little off. I guess we become used to having our significant others right by us. We become a little dependent on them being there...to help make decisions, discuss the days events, and just to watch TV and comment on the shows. And I used to be a Self-Sufficient Bachelor many years ago. I am really out of practice. Can't wait till she gets home.

Places I Go to Eat(at lunch anyway)

patches@clearchannel.com

Patches,
You need to have some bbq at the Rio Grande Grill. It is located on Van Buren street, right next to the Plazita in downtown Harlingen. Only catch is that they close at 4 p.m. daily. So you'll have to try it during lunch hours. Its a small place but the bbq is delicious and the staff is super friendly!
Tell them Ugly Betty sent ya!
-KTEX Listener, Ugly Betty

I've had 2 bad fajita experiences in a row at La Casa del Taco in Weslaco. I'll only go back if they get some better meat.

Went to the new Logans that has been opened for about 3 weeks in Harlingen for the 1st time and was not impressed. Steak was cooked wrong(it was rare not medium) My waitress was talking to her manager and even though others tried (3 other waiters/waitresses came to our table) to get things going for us, the service was not good. Their delicious bread finally arrived when our meal was served(they evidently have only a limited space to make the bread, so it's hit or miss when you'll get yours). Let me say this though, the manager and GM listened to my complaints and gave me the meal free. I will give them another chance in a couple of weeks. Hopefully, they'll work out the kinks of being fairly new. I hope so, as that day I know of 2 other groups of 4 that weren't impressed either.

I have been asked to check out a really fine eating establishment. Lansky and Brats in Mcallen. What should I get??  E-mail me with suggestions patches@clearchannel.com .I'll update you as soon as I get there!

Here in Weslaco, we got some places that always serve up a good meal. You may catch me at lunch someday(I'll probably be reading a good book). In no particular order

Carinos ( I usuall try to eat lunch with my wife in Mcallen or Pharr. Or on the weekends at the one in Brownsville. Combo Skillitini, the bread, salad, YUM!)
Wendys (love the mandarin chicken salad)
The Blue Onion( their salads are great and the flat bread will get you hooked)
Lubys(I gots to eat a meal with veggies or my wife gets upset)
Little Italy(Ron & Nancy have a wonderful place)

And there's always more( now if only the boss would let me take those 2 hour lunches)

When I get the time I will go to...
Longhorn Cattle Company(great steaks and the banana pudding is to die for)
Pepe's Mexican restaurant in Harlingen(the service and food are outstanding.)
China Restaurant in Harlingen(great taste in every dish)
Mama Mia's Pizza in Mcallen(best pizza I've had in the valley)

The Wow Factor!
Bistro M(for special occasions, exceptional tasting food, and food conversation like you wouldn't believe)

Now if there is someplace that you think I should try out ... e-mail me patches@clearchannel.com

Cd and Book Reviews
Tuesday 06-10-2008 8:48am CT
CD's

Jamey Johnson...That Lonesome Song
This reminds me of a Waylon Jennings session album. There's banter between the songs and they kinda flow right into the next song, and Jamey sings country music! I don't know if he will get a lot of radio play but I think this is a must have in your music collection. He's got the sound of Waylon, Merle and others in that time and the outlaw attitude as well!

Lady Antebellum..Self Titled CD
This is a brand new group that really sounds fresh and different. Their first single (that you can hear this week on KTEX for the 1st time) is called "Love Don't Live Here". Nice lead vocals by Charles Kelley. But the group has another talented singer in the person of Hillary Scott, and she performs lead vocals on almost half the songs as well. (Hillary has some music heritage going for her. her mom is Linda Davis whom you may remember singing opposite Reba on the smash "Does He Love You?" Dave Haywood rounds out this group with background vocals and killer guitar work and almost any other instrument the band needs. Keep this group in mind to see how far they can go

George Strait...Troubadour
This is classic George with a couple of duets as well. He teams up with Patty Loveless on a song called "House Of Cash", a song that needed two voices to talk about the loss Of Johnnie and June. Then a buddy of Georges', Dean Dillon, who has written some of Straits' biggest hits sings with him on a song that Dean and Texas icon Robert Earl Keen co-wrote called "West Texas Town".
12 cuts on the cd and  George still sounds great!

Josh Gracin...We Weren't Crazy.
Josh has a great voice these days, he has taken to his singing career full force. I kid you not this is a real singer( I shouldn't be that surprised, after watching Josh perform live with Lonestar when Richie Mcdonald couldn't perform for a couple of dates last year, but honestly he has improved from even then.WOW) There may be a weak cut on the CD, but I haven't found it yet.

BOOKS

061008
Read "Memorial Day" by Vince Flynn. 3rd or 4th in a series that has the character Mitch Rapp in it. This fictionional piece deals with the government and their most interesting agent (Mitch Rapp) trying to stop a terrorist and several cells in the U.S. from blowing up a nuclear device in Washinton , D.C. on Memorial Day. Great read and chacter.

060508
I just finished the follow up to "The Quiet Game". "Turning Angel" by Greg Isles starts off with a high school senior who supposedly had everything going for her, drowned but only after she was killed by someone 1st. Great action takes the main character, Penn Cage, on a roller-coaster thriller with a former high school pal that Penn owes his life to asking him to represent him, even though he did not kill the girl. Greg Isles can write a great story.

050608
I just finished "The Quiet Game" By Greg Isles. A recent widower returns to his hometown of Natchez, Mississippi with his young daughter only to get caught up in re-opening a 30-year-old racial murder investigation that twists and turns into a barnburner of a read. Simpathetic character developement and a great storyline may mean that some of these characters come back in a sequel. Highly recommend.

I love to read and the best book I've read in a long time is called "The Kite Runner" by Kahled Housenni, an Afghan native who lives in America. This is what literature is all about. Great writing. Great story. And if your heart is not affected in some way throughout this book, you don't have one. It reminds me of classics we are forced to read in school(you know the ones, just so we can recognize what great storytelling is all about) and this is one for the ages. GREAT!
Vacation Or Places Of Interest
Tuesday 06-17-2008 10:22am CT
I am heading to the eastern part of Mexico( Playa Del Carmen) at the end of June and my wife and I will be taking pictures of everything. I'll let you know how it was when we get back. I can't hardly wait.

Here is something we can all take advantage of: using this space to direct other KTEX listeners to spots we have found that are nice depending on what vacation plans you have.
My wife and I love Las Vegas, but not for the strip but all the places you can go once you get there.(check out my pics). Here's something someone sent me.

"One of the places you have to check out is Acoma Sky City in New Mexico. This city has been continually inhabited since before Leif Erickson came to these shores in 1000 A.D. The property is handed down by ancient tribal law.It is a matriarchal society, property is willed to the youngest daughter. There is no electricity or running water,no telephones. You need to buy a permit for each camera. The Hotel-casino owned by the tribe is pretty neat too. You can get a great deal on a great ribeye."
Harold D. Wright Sr., R.N.,T.N.S.C.E.N

Thanks Harold, and we will be looking for something from you who are reading this as well.
My Ford Truck Test Drive
Thursday 06-05-2008 8:54am CT
patches@clearchannel.com

052708
Nice ride and it held everything I put in when I went to Home Depot, Tractor Supply and HEB in the same trip. And it still rode smooth even with the load. I like the strength of the truck...it's well built.

05/20/08
I'm driving a Ford F-150 as a test drive till the 28th. It's a nice ride. And Ford has got The Summer Holiday Sales Drive going on with some great interest rates and cash back! Check out www.ford.com

05/13/08
Tomorrow I get to test drive a new Ford F-150, similar to the one KTEX and Boggus Ford are giving away. I'll put it thru its paces for the next couple of weeks, and let you know what I really think about it.

040308
We've teamed up with Boggus Ford in Mcallen to give you a chance to win a 2008 Ford F-150 pick-up. (details @ ktex.net) I had the chance to test drive a new Ford Truck and here is some of my thoughts...

03/03/08
Finished my test drive and have to admit, I probably won't buy a diesel. The fuel is a little more expensive, but that is supposed to be offset by the reduction in regular maintenence costs. I still want one of our station vehilces to be a diesel, cause when you run them standing still like we do when we're out on remote,
it doesn't wear on the diesel as much as it does on a gas engine. Really good ride, but it would have been better if I didn't need a ladder to get into it. God, I must be getting old.

I've been given the opportunity to have a 2 week test drive of a Ford F250 Super Duty 4X4 TurboDiesel...Hey it's truck month at the Ford dealers thru March 31st, some great incentives. Alright, this is my 1st experience with a diesel. Not much problem to me except diesel fuel is a little more expensive. Great pick-up with the turbo, and when I kept it to 60 on the expressway, I was getting 18 miles to the gallon. At 70 mph it  dropped to 16.2 mpg. Now if you got a heavy foot, or your hauling a heavy load (and this truck will carry about 6000 lbs in the bed) it'll get between 11 and 13 mpg and sometimes less depending on conditions.
I do know that a big truck will turn some heads!!

The inside isn't foo-foo at all. I don't have one on this model, but you can get a power seat on the drivers side(I prefer them) and you can also get a package that gets you power seats and power side mirrors. That is really cool as well.

I'm getting lots of looks from people and they love the truck. I haven't used the 4 wheel drive yet(I'm hoping it rains, or that I can get to the island to try it out.)

I'll keep you up to date!!!
Good Folks!

Getting better!!!
The Sesame Family Clinic and the Sesame Pharmacy folks are so nice. Hope you don't have to visit them too often, but when you do, they will treat you right!!

TAXING STUFF!!!
Thanks to Pat Elder at H&R Block for the help on the taxes.

CRASH!!!!
The guys at Safelite Auto Glass in McAllen replaced my passenger side window at a fraction of the cost of some other places. Thanks for making a road call to do it as well.

MAKE-A-WISH
Have you ever talked to Eva Sandlin? Call her or one of the volunteers and find out how much your help is needed. 686-WISH!

PLANT IT. IT WILL GROW
JD and the crew at Grower Direct Nursery in McAllen picked out a wonderful tree for me and it looks great in the yard. It's about 12-14 ft and we love it. They got what you need. Call 'em at 369-TREE. Big Trees. Little Prices.
